The Mercury Mariner Hybrid could get up to 60 miles per gallon while going downhill on highway driving, but it averaged about 28 or so for all the mixed driving I did. It's a big car, though! I fit five people and our luggage in it for a long distance trip. I like your comment that "if enough consumers would make a purchase, the cost of the hybrid would come down." Demand drives price, and that's why I was willing to do the test drive and talk about it, even if the particular car I tried doesn't get the best mpg overall.
