Here is a chance to learn from others’ mistakes! Living on purpose would be so much easier if we knew what to avoid, wouldn’t it? Going out into the world from the shelter of your parent’s house leads to lots of “Duh!” moments, and don’t think it stops anytime soon after moving out. Let’s keep this advice upbeat, a little humorous, and informative. I’ll moderate all comments and choose the best!
1. Only heat the crockpot with the heating unit it was sold with.
Here is what happens to the ceramic crockpot when you run out of pots in which to boil water for pasta and try to use, instead, the slow cooker on the electric range. Within five minutes it might crack and split open. Jessica learned it the hard way in December 08.
2. Remember that dead mice are not the only thing that smells like dead mice.
Rotted potatoes also smell like dead mice. Jessica found out the hard way when she tried to blame the landlord of the apartments she lived in for not taking care of the rodent problem. “Something smells like death in my kitchen! There must be dead mice in the walls.” Oh, boy, she complained enough that the landlord came over to investigate himself and found, you guessed it, a nasty, slimy, sprouted bag of potatoes rotting in the back of the cabinet. So save yourself the embarrassment! (story from 1997.)
3. “It is not selfish to Care for Yourself First. How else can you give if you’re running on empty?”
From Ariela, May 2009.
It’s been said many times, many ways =). I learned it the hard way, from experience.
I am definitely A Giver…giving, giving, giving and for a long time never thought about myself. There’s soooo much that we were taught, instilled with…to think of others before ourselves. The key part of this is: Don’t think of others INSTEAD of yourself.
I was running on empty decades ago. What I ended up giving, from not recharging Miss Number One…was my own Vitality – My LifeForce- and I started to physically suffer from it. There has got to be a Balance. All is Giving AND Receiving….Self AND Others.
Have you ever seen something Beautiful and the first thing you did was tell someone, “Take a look at this!”…before you even fully took in all the beauty and enjoyment for Yourself? That’s the same kind of conditioning. It’s deeply ingrained in us, but doesn’t do any real good. Same goes for airplanes if you’re flying with a child in case of an accident, they tell you to take the oxygen First before you give it to the child…because YOU need to Live to provide for that child!
So yes, yes, yes…recharge, replenish, do whatever feeds your Soul and Spirit. ReEnergize your Vitality and LifeForce. It is Onederful to want to Serve Others, I LIVE for Service…but Fully Charged and Happy, you can do Greater Good for Humanity…Authentically and more Powerfully.
